High school football players push their limits daily. They rise early for practice, refining skills and strategies. With every snap, they aim for victory. Teammates bond, forging lifelong friendships. Balancing academics and athletics, they build discipline. Each game teaches resilience, teamwork, and leadership. Future dreams grow. Sometimes things go against you, but we had the feeling we wasn't playing badly. We had some good moments but sometimes you have to force the luck. Norton called Gainer's death "perhaps the most heartbreaking situation imaginable for a family and a community." In a Facebook post, Davis said it was "such an emotional night as the importance of football faded away." Nearly a century ago in 1928, Champion was a senior at Perry when he died as a result of head trauma while making a tackle in a game at Mentor. He was the first high school student-athlete in Lake County to die while in competition. Norton described Gainer's death as a "tragic loss" and said "our community is in profound sorrow." Yet here we are right after Labor Day, contemplating another rash of tragedies in high school football. With those tragedies come another set of well-meaning people and communities wondering what, if anything, they could have done to prevent it. As such, we have nominated the following athletes for this week for the SBLive’s Maryland High School Football Player of the Week award, and we ask you, the fans, to help decide who should indeed be the top athlete selected.
